Fire Prevention Month
Effective Date: Saturday, October 1st, 2011
WHEREAS, in 2010, 75 percent of all structure fires in Alaska occurred in residential structures, and 100 percent of civilian fire fatalities occurred in residential structures; and
WHEREAS, fires can be prevented by following simple fire safety tips in your home. In Alaska, the two major causes for home fires are unsafe heating practices and unattended cooking. It is of vital importance that Alaskans have their heating system checked and serviced by a certified technician annually; and
WHEREAS, to increase the chance of escaping if a fire does occur, it is important to have an escape plan and to practice it regularly with all family members; as well as residential fire sprinklers and working smoke alarms ; and
WHEREAS, to emphasize our commitment to public safety and recognize and support fire prevention efforts throughout Alaska, the month of October is set aside to build a distinct awareness of fire safety; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety and fire and emergency services across the state will be educating Alaskans about fire safe behaviors and fire prevention techniques throughout the month, and always provides fire safety information online at http://www.akburny.com; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the efforts of the State of Alaska, it is of vital importance that every Alaskan get involved in practicing fire safety every day. By following these safety tips, Alaskans can reduce fire injuries and death due to fires in the home.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim October 2011 as:
Fire Prevention Month
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work, and school, and to practice this year’s fire safety theme “Protect Your Family From Fire” throughout the year.
