Thelma Buchholdt Day

WHEREAS, Thelma Buchholdt was born in Claveria, Cagayan on the Island of Luzon, Philippines. Thelma came to the United States in 1951 where she earned her bachelor's degree from Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, California, and her Juris Doctor degree from the District of Columbia School of Law in Washington, D.C.

WHEREAS, Thelma and her family moved to Alaska in 1965. Thelma was active in the Anchorage community through the March of Dimes, the League of Women Voters, and she helped found the Boys and Girls Clubs of Alaska. Thelma was elected as the first woman President of the Filipino Community of Anchorage in 1973.

WHEREAS, Thelma was elected to the Alaska State House of Representatives in 1974, making her the first Filipino woman elected to a state legislative body in the United States and the first Filipino of either gender to serve in a U.S. mainland state Legislature. Thelma was reelected three times, serving her election district in Anchorage until 1982.

WHEREAS, Thelma was also a member of the Alaska State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights for more than 32 years, and served as Trustee of the Filipino-American National Historical Society for ten years.

WHEREAS, Thelma initiated the formation of the Asian Alaskan Cultural Center in 1980. When the center became incorporated in 1983, she was elected president of its board of directors and served in this capacity until 1988. She was a trustee of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS).

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sarah Palin, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2007, as:

in Alaska, and encourage all residents to remember and honor Thelma Buchholdt.
