Gov. Requests Federal Declaration for Floods

June 14, 2013, Juneau, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell today requested a federal disaster declaration for the 2013 spring floods along the Yukon River and its tributaries. The floods resulted from a rapid thaw after an extended, colder-than-average spring. This caused serious ice jam flooding and high water from snow melt runoff in the Alaska Gateway, Yukon-Flats, Yukon Koyukuk, Lower Yukon and Copper River Regional Educational Attendance Areas.

“The disaster has left 194 homes uninhabitable and keeping Alaskans safe and restoring them to their homes remains our priority,” Governor Parnell said. “We will pursue all resources available to assist with the recovery and rebuilding efforts.”

Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment Teams from the State of Alaska, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Small Business Administration and Red Cross were deployed last week to determine the extent of the damages. The teams conducted damage assessments in Circle, Ft. Yukon, Galena, Hughes, Eagle, Alakanuk, Emmonak, and the Gulkana area for both Public Assistance and Individual Assistance programs. The preliminary damage assessment has estimated more than $10 million in damages to public infrastructure and more than 225 homes within these communities.

Governor Parnell issued the state disaster declaration on May 31, which activated the state’s disaster recovery programs. The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management continues to implement its Public Assistance and Individual Assistance programs to expedite recovery while awaiting a federal declaration, which would release federal assistance.
