Governor Surveys Flooding in Mat-Su Valley

September 21, 2012, Anchorage, Alaska - After visiting the State Emergency Operations Center yesterday, Governor Sean Parnell is surveying the extent of flooding in the Mat-Su Valley area this afternoon on a National Guard helicopter and landed in Talkeetna. Major General Thomas H. Katkus, Adjutant General of the Alaska National Guard, and John Madden, director of the State of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management are traveling with the governor.

“Ensuring the safety of Alaskans is a top priority for the entire administration,” Governor Parnell said. “The flight today is giving me a full understanding of the scope of the event and the impact on the residents of the Mat-Su Valley. Once the waters have subsided, we will immediately begin the damage assessments.”

The State of Alaska is supporting local governments, volunteer groups, and federal agencies to assist ongoing relief efforts throughout Southcentral Alaska.

The American Red Cross has reopened the Sunshine Senior Center (Upper Susitna Senior Center) as a shelter in addition to the Willow Community Center for the Talkeetna area.
