Alaska National Guard Appreciation Day
WHEREAS, the Alaska National Guard was formed before the start of the Second World War to act as a first line of defense for the United States of America, inducting Alaska into the long tradition of the oldest branch of the United States military; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska National Guard first rendered invaluable service to the nation in World War II and has since mobilized and deployed troops to Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan in the support of the War on Terror, and also regularly provides emergency relief to Alaskans; and
WHEREAS, the Alaska Territorial Guard was a central component of Alaska’s defense forces. In 1941, over 6,000 Alaskan volunteers of all ages “from Metlakatla to Barrow” courageously answered the call to arms in response to the threat of foreign invasion, providing critical expertise in the challenging Alaskan environment and helping to secure a decisive tactical victory for the United States; and
WHEREAS, today over 4,000 Alaska National Guardsmen and women remain poised to assist federal missions, protect the lives and property of fellow Alaskans and Americans, preserve public safety, support civil authorities, undertake search and rescue operations, oppose illegal drug trafficking, and provide relief during state and national emergencies; and
WHEREAS, Alaska observes Alaska National Guard Day on July 30th of each year in commemoration of the branch’s formal authorization in 1948, and it is fitting that we pause each year to recognize these courageous men and women who are always ready to serve, protect, and defend the people of our great state.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim July 30, 2012 as:
Alaska National Guard Appreciation Day
in Alaska, and encourage Alaskans to honor the sacrifices and service of past and present members of the Alaska National Guard.
Dated: July 30, 2012
