Gov. Welcomes Disney Cruise Line Announcement
April 6, 2011, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell today welcomed the news that Disney Cruise Line will continue to operate in Alaska for the 2012 season.
Disney Cruise Line will be deploying a ship to Alaska for the first time in 2011; however the company had made an initial commitment for only one year. By adding an additional year, Alaska will welcome approximately 38,400 passengers, providing nearly $40 million in direct and indirect spending in Alaska businesses that was previously unanticipated for 2012.
“I am extremely pleased with Disney’s announcement today,” Governor Parnell said. “Thousands of additional families will have an opportunity to experience Alaska. Disney Cruise Line has demonstrated confidence in Alaska's business climate by adding another ship in 2012.”
Governor Parnell sponsored and signed legislation that reduced the cruise passenger head tax from $46 per head to $34.50, after meeting with small business owners and visitor industry leaders and learning of the detrimental effects from the excise tax. He has also committed to maintain a competitive program to market Alaska as a world-class visitor destination. Reversing the decline in visitor travel has been a focus of the Parnell administration.
